Basic Eligibility
  • Candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • Candidate must hold the educational and training qualification prescribed by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) for the relevant school level, as detailed in the official notification. For special school teacher posts, qualification recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) is required.

Note: Teachers appointed and working before 2012 who have successfully passed the Dakshata Pariksha (Competency Test) do not need to qualify the TET. Candidates who meet the prescribed educational qualifications and appear for the Secondary Teacher Eligibility Test (STET) 2026 can also apply.   • Primary (Classes 1–5): Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with a two-year Diploma in Elementary Education, OR Senior Secondary with a four-year B.El.Ed., OR Graduation with a two-year Diploma in Elementary Education, OR Graduation/Senior Secondary with a two-year D.Ed. in Special Education, as per NCTE norms.
  • Middle (Classes 6–8): Graduation with a two-year Diploma in Elementary Education, OR Graduation/Post-Graduation with B.Ed., OR a four-year B.A./B.Sc.Ed. or B.A.Ed./B.Sc.Ed., along with the required subject combination for Language, Mathematics & Science, or Social Science teachers as specified in the notification.
  • Secondary (Classes 9–10): Graduation/Post-Graduation in the relevant subject group with at least 50% marks, along with B.Ed. from an NCTE-recognised institution.
  • Higher Secondary (Classes 11–12): Post-Graduation in the relevant subject with at least 50% marks, along with B.Ed., or an equivalent qualification recognised by NCTE.

Note: Divyang (PwD) candidates are eligible for 10 years of age relaxation. Ex-servicemen receive 3 years of relaxation plus the actual period of military service, subject to the condition that their actual age does not exceed 57 years on the date of application. Serving Bihar Government employees are eligible for 5 years of age relaxation, subject to a maximum of 5 competitive examination attempts under this relaxation. Teachers working in Panchayati Raj institutions/Nagar Nikay institutions are also eligible for relaxed age limits as prescribed by the applicable rules. The superannuation age is 60 years.

BPSC TRE-4.0 Selection Process

Selection is made in two stages – a Preliminary Examination and a Main Examination. There is no interview.

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination

  • Objective-type General Studies paper; all questions carry equal (1) marks.
  • Duration: 2 hours; Total marks: 150.
  • Each question offers 5 options (A, B, C, D, E); candidates must mark one option. Option (E) must be chosen if the candidate does not wish to attempt the question.
  • Negative marking: 1/3 mark deducted for each wrong answer, and 1/3 mark deducted for any question left unanswered without selecting option (E).
  • Covers general science, current national and international events, Indian history and Bihar’s history, general geography, Bihar’s geographical features, India’s polity and economy, the freedom movement and Bihar’s contribution, and general mental ability.
  • Minimum qualifying marks: General category 40%, BC 36.5%, EBC 34%, SC/ST/women/Divyang candidates 32% (with an additional 4% horizontal relaxation for women, subject to a minimum of 32%, applicable only to Bihar domicile candidates).
  • Number of candidates shortlisted for the Main Examination will be 2.5 to 10 times the total advertised vacancies, category-wise, based on merit.

  • Objective (MCQ) Examination: The Main Examination will consist of objective-type multiple-choice questions. Each paper will have a 2-hour duration, and each question will carry 1 mark.
  • Negative Marking: 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong or unanswered question, following the same 5-option format as the Preliminary Examination.
  • Language Paper (Part I): Part I is qualifying in nature. Candidates must secure at least 30% marks in this paper. Marks obtained in Part I will not be counted for merit.
  • Minimum Qualifying Marks: The same category-wise minimum qualifying marks prescribed for the Preliminary Examination will apply: General – 40%, BC – 36.5%, EBC – 34%, and SC/ST/Women/Divyang – 32%.
  • Merit Calculation: For Primary School (Classes 1–5), the Commission will calculate merit using Part II marks only. For all other teaching levels, the Commission will calculate merit using the combined marks of Part II and Part III.
  • Re-evaluation: The Commission will not allow re-evaluation of the Main Examination answer sheets.

Note: Eligible Guest Teachers (Atithi Shikshak) will receive 5 service-based weightage marks for each completed year of service, up to a maximum of 25 marks. The authorities will add these weightage marks to the candidates’ qualifying scores in both the Preliminary and Main Examinations, in accordance with the applicable court orders and Education Department resolutions.

  2. Complete the One Time Registration (OTR) using a valid mobile number and email ID.
  3. Log in to the BPSC application portal using your registered credentials and select the School Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE-4.0) application.

  5. Upload the prescribed photograph, signatures, and supporting documents in the specified format and size.
  6. Select the applicable teaching level/category and provide the required eligibility details.

  10. Keep a printed copy of the submitted application form and payment receipt for use during the recruitment process.

Important: Once the candidate completes the application fee payment, the candidate cannot change the selected post/subject. To make a change, the candidate must cancel the payment and repeat the entire application process. The authorities will not provide any refund or accept any chargeback claim for cancelled payments or applications.

Important Conditions

  • Candidates can select a maximum of 38 districts in their preferred order. The Commission will prepare the merit list and allot districts according to the candidate’s district preference and category-wise available vacancies.
  • A candidate can appear in this recruitment examination a maximum of 5 times, as prescribed under the Bihar Vidyalaya Adhyapak (Appointment, Transfer, Disciplinary Action & Service Conditions) Amendment Rules, 2024.
  • Only original/domiciled residents of Bihar can claim reservation benefits.
  • Candidates must select only one subject, and the selected subject must match the subject in which they have qualified the relevant Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET/BTET/STET).
  • Reserved-category candidates who apply against Unreserved (UR) vacancies cannot claim reserved-category age relaxation or relaxed qualifying marks.
